Teaching with Merlin Bird ID with Dr. Nancy Trautmann

March 3, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Join Dr. Nancy Trautmann, former director of Education for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and learn how the Merlin Bird ID app helps beginners to identify birds by sight, sound, or with a photo. But its uses go way beyond identifying bird species. In this interactive webinar, we’ll try using the app to discover what birds are in your region right now, and which ones stay year-round versus migrating from season to season. Linking biological and physical sciences, we’ll explore how to “see” bird songs by linking sounds with visual spectrograms. Using recordings you can make with the app, we’ll see how to listen to species either individually or in mixed soundscapes. If you’ve used Merlin with your students, please plan to share your experiences and ideas. If you think you have no interest in teaching about birds, come anyway and we may just change your mind.
